Literacy class helps sisters change their family forever
Bible-based literacy classes are bringing illiterate women hope for a better life today - and for eternity.12 August 2009
Sania and Sushma are sisters, living in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
They were raised by poor, uneducated parents who supported the family through farming. They grew up unable to read and write, in physical and spiritual poverty.
Then Sania and Sushma met a Mission India Adult Literacy teacher. Having never stepped foot inside a school, the young women eagerly accepted his invitation to join the nightly class.
Night after night, week after week, the sisters studied and practiced their lessons.
Within a year, they went from not being able to read their own names to being able to read an entire book!
They also learned how to do embroidery, a new skill they could use to earn more income for the family.
Along with their studies, Sania and Sushma also embraced the Christian message.
They were amazed to hear that Jesus was born in a poor carpenter’s home, lived a humble life and sacrificed His own life for their sins. They understood that Jesus loves everyone, whether great or small, rich or poor, and that He treats everyone equally.
Sania and Sushma not only accepted Jesus as their Saviour, they also shared the Good News with their parents, who are also following Jesus today!
