Kaji’s Children

Kaji and her children often went hungry. An Adult Literacy class offered Kaji a chance to free herself from poverty...

Literacy classes are giving women like Kaji an opportunity to improve their family's life today - both spiritually and physically!

15 July 2010

Kaji’s children held out their grimy hands and begged her for food.

Tears gathered in Kaji’s eyes as she shook her head. “No,” she said, “we do not have more food.”

Her husband was a drunkard. Their family had grown poorer and poorer as he drank away his income.

Today, as Kaji looked again at her children’s threadbare clothing and pleading faces, she decided she had finally had enough.

She walked door to door, looking for work. Soon, Kaji was offered a job in a shoe factory.

Every evening, Kaji tiredly returned home from work after the sun set. The few coins she earned were spent immediately on food.

Since Kaji was illiterate, she could not find a job that offered higher pay.

One day, a friend of Kaji’s told her about Adult Literacy classes. Kaji had been waiting for an opportunity like this. At night, she walked to her first class.

Kaji was a bright student. She studied late into the night, determined to give her children a better future.

After months of hard work, Kaji could read, write, and do simple arithmetic!

Kaji began making and selling products out of her home. She quit her job at the shoe factory. Now she earns enough to feed and clothe her children.

Kaji also secretly accepted Christ as her personal Savior. She lives in a region of India where less than 1% of people are Christians - she's afraid of being persecuted for her faith. Please keep Kaji’s safety in your prayers.
