Life-changing literacy

30 year old Priya couldn't read bus signs or even apply for a job...

25 August 2010

“No! Absolutely not!”

Priya’s heart sank at her husband’s words.

“But why?” she quietly asked.

“Listen, Priya. You and I can't read. Our children will have an education – surely that must be enough.”

But it wasn’t.

Priya’s family lived in poverty...and she barely had enough money to scrape together for food each day. She could not even apply for a job because she could not fill out the paperwork.

“I am thankful that our children are learning,” she said after a pause. “Maybe at least one of us should be educated in order to help the children with their schoolwork.”

He sighed, and then to Priya’s surprise and joy, her husband finally agreed. Priya enrolled in Mission India's Adult Literacy Class the next day. She couldn’t help but smile.

Just three months later, Priya had made astounding progress. She could write her name and several other words. She could read her first primer, and she was skilled at two-digit arithmetic.

She was able to help her children with their schoolwork.

Adult Literacy classes changed Priya’s life.

Now, Priya says, “I am able to fill in application forms for jobs, read the boards of buses, and calculate money when buying things! I am also interested in reading the Bible. Throughout the class, this book was a great inspiration to me.”

Priya is attending a local Christian church, but she does not yet know the Lord Jesus as her Saviour. Please pray for the salvation of Priya and her family.
