Light over darkness
Family discovers the light of Jesus in their dark struggles
Today Jatriya and Manoj and their two children are trusting Jesus to care for all their needs.10 September 2009
Manoj and his wife Jatriya belong to a tribal group and live in a remote village in the state of Gujarat, on India’s west coast.
They were raised by their parents to worship idols and offer sacrifices to please the spirits.
Though they were blessed with a son and daughter, Manoj was not happy with his life and he began drinking.
The alcohol brought a dark cloud of depression over their home as Jatriya and her children lived in fear of being beaten.
Jatriya had to work in the fields to earn money for food and other basic needs, because Manoj was too lazy and drunk to keep a job.
Jatriya then met two Church Planters ministering in her village, and they asked her to share her story.
The pain and anguish tumbled out of Jatriya as she told them how close she was to taking her own life, because living with Manoj had become too much to bear.
The Church Planters prayed with Jatriya and invited her to a worship service in the village.
At the meeting everyone gathered to pray for Jatriya and asked God to change Manoj’s heart.
Jatriya began praying to Jesus every day. She pleaded with God to change her husband and to bring peace to her family.
Over the weeks and months, Jatriya began to see small changes:
- Manoj stopped drinking every day
- He helped with household chores, and began talking about looking for a job
- And then he even joined Jatriya and her children at church!
Today, Jatriya, Manoj and their children are baptised believers. They have enrolled their children in school and attend church regularly.
Jatriya says she is confident that Jesus, who answered her prayers for her husband, truly cares for all of her family’s needs.
